Wembanyama: “I Played Bad”
Wembanyama Takes Responsibility After Tough Finals Loss
San Antonio kicked off the NBA Finals with a tough blow right in their home arena. Despite being up by 14 points and serving up some sweet basketball highlights, the Texas team ultimately fell to the Knicks, 95-105. This loss means they’ve got to dig deep yet again, just like they did in the last two series. And guess what? Victor Wembanyama is ready to step up and own his part of it.
The big man ended up as the top scorer for the local team with 26 points, not to mention 12 rebounds and 3 blocks. But let’s be real; offensively, he wasn’t exactly the dominating force we know he can be. With a woeful 6 out of 21 shooting and 6 turnovers, getting past that aggressive defense was a tough cookie to crumble. Wembanyama himself recognizes that he didn’t bring his A-game.
He straight up said, “I played bad today. It’s as simple as that.” The Frenchman admitted that they’ve faced bigger challenges down in a series before, but never in the Finals. “I’m not going to beat myself up over what happened. Not worried at all!” he added with a smile.
Similarly, Coach Mitch Johnson remains hopeful about Wembanyama’s growth as the series unfolds, stating that he’ll definitely take some lessons from this game: “I think he feels responsible, but I hope he learns a lot from today’s game and knows how to tackle Game 2.”
Victor started the match hot, nailing his first shot and following up with a three-pointer. But then came a loooong dry spell where he couldn’t buy a bucket, relying mainly on free throws to get some numbers on the board. His shining moment came in the fourth quarter, where he sparked a 9-0 run that briefly put San Antonio back in the lead, but alas, it wasn’t enough to snag a win that was already slipping away.
Despite the bumps in the road he’s faced in playoffs, Wembanyama has consistently found ways to bounce back, emerging stronger each time. Let’s see if he can pull off another miracle in Game 2 as the Spurs desperately seek victory to avoid making life a whole lot harder for themselves!
