After months of swirling rumors, Kuminga inked a two-year deal worth $12.4 million with the Timberwolves, despite the hefty interest from the sunny Los Angeles and even a more generous offer from Portland. Yep, the Wolves managed to sway him, and it wasn’t just the dollar bills talking.
Clear Roles: What the Wolves Offered
Turner explained, “We had extensive talks with JJ Redick, and it was clear there was a solid role for Kuminga as a ‘four’—especially on the offensive end with the spacing.” Sure, the Lakers threw in their pitch, but they couldn’t muster the same level of commitment that Minnesota brought to the table.
What’s the Culture Fit?
According to Turner, “Minnesota and LA clearly presented two very distinct basketball situations.” It’s true; the cultural fit is a bit different. With the Lakers, the offer just didn’t vibe with what they envisioned for a starting forward in the upcoming years. Accepting below the mid-level wouldn’t secure a long-term commitment, and they weren’t willing to settle.

Turner emphasized that both he and Kuminga felt the eagerness from everyone involved to welcome him onboard. “The conversations with Anthony Edwards, Chris Finch, the owner, GM, coaching staff, and the stars… everyone was totally aligned on Kuminga being the player they wanted,” he wrapped up.
