Irving on His Knee Injury: “It’s the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”
When a basketball player suffers a serious injury, it often feels like the sky is falling. Just ask Kyrie Irving, who had to deal with the pain of a torn ACL back in March 2025. Fast forward nearly 19 months, and it seems like he’s turned that frown upside down.
In a recent media day appearance with the Mavericks, Kyrie had a surprisingly upbeat takeaway from his injury ordeal. “You know what? My injury was probably the best thing to happen to me,” he declared. “I was absolutely obsessed with basketball and logging every minute on the court. If you had asked me how I was feeling physically back then, I probably wouldn’t have given you a truthful answer.”
Reflecting on the past year, Irving shared that he’s had time to re-evaluate his goals as both a player and a person. He’s focusing on becoming a better leader, opening up emotionally, and just, you know, acting his age. “At 34, as I gear up for my 16th season, I’ve experienced a rollercoaster of ups and downs. But let me tell you, when it comes to competing, I’m all in—no doubts about that!”
With the past behind him, Irving is itching to trade his recliner for the hardwood again. After a long year and a half off, there are plenty of questions about whether he can bounce back to his former glory. But if you ask him, he’s ready to knock some socks off. “I’m ready to hit the court and show everyone what I can do. Sure, there are rumors swirling about my performance, but right now, I’ve got the confidence of a champ. In this league, they only care about what you’ve done lately. So, it’s time for me to lace up my sneakers and remind everyone—this is just like riding a bike!”
